Charlotte Bolden at ALA's Reach the Beach 2014

Global Aviation staff teamed together to “Reach the Beach” in the annual American Lung Association’s (ALA) bike riding event in May. Charlotte Bolden, Brian Lockhart and Alan Baker combined to pedal over 200 miles to Pacific City, Oregon, and raise funds to help the ALA save lives.

“People participate in Reach the Beach for a variety of reasons. Many have lost someone to cancer and ride in their memory. Some have a friend or family member who has cancer and ride in their honor. Others join because it’s fun and a challenge,” said Bolden, Global Aviation’s Customer Service Representative.

Bolden, Lockhart and Baker are an experienced Reach the Beach team. This was Bolden’s second time crossing the finish line. In 2013 Bolden signed up as a symbolic challenge to her son to quit smoking. She happily reports that it worked. This year Bolden rode in honor of her mother-in-law who is currently in treatment for lung cancer.

The ALA uses the funds raised through Reach the Beach to search for lung disease cures, to keep kids off tobacco and to fight for laws that protect the air we breathe. Currently participants have achieved 88 percent of the 2014 event goal of $475,000. Gifts can still be made through the ALA website and on personal sponsor pages like Bolden’s.

Baker, Global Aviation’s Line Service Assistant Manager, and Lockhart, Global Aviation’s Vice President and Director of Maintenance, are riding enthusiasts and have both reached the beach four times. Both plan on riding again in 2015, the 25th anniversary of the Reach the Beach event.

“My motivation just stems from my desire to ride. I’ll definitely be doing it again!” said Baker.

Brian Lockhart completes his fourth ALA Reach the Beach ride

Lockhart shares his love of bike riding with his adult daughter who “when the stars align” still joins him for riding adventures. She was the first to propose that he try the Reach the Beach event.

This year’s ride included perfect biking weather with sun, moderate temperatures and very little headwind. Baker, Bolden, and Lockhart enjoyed crossing the finish line at the Pelican Brewery in Pacific City and the fun beach party with thousands of cyclists.

“It was a day for sunglasses and sunscreen rather than the typical May rain jackets,” said Bolden. “The beach party was in full swing when we arrived and the beer tasted fabulous!”
